Making Music at St Peter's College, Oxford

Our construction project at St Peter's College in Oxford is well underway, read how we plan to refurbish rooms within a historical building.

What are we working on at St Peter's College?

The Pastry School is the name given to one of St Peter's buildings. The building was first built as cookery building for the Oxford central Girls School between 1899 and 1901. It is a relatively early and unique example of an arts and crafts building.

Designed by architect Leonard Alyosius Scott Stokes the building is described as having a Queen Anne Revival design. This features patterned red and yellow brickwork, large timber sash windows and cupola.

With the age of the building various accessibility issues arise, however, it is difficult to install modern features without infringing on historical elements of the building. Alongside this, some of the music facilities inside are dated and in need of an upgrade, something important for St Peter's.

Our current progress with the project

We are currently in the design phase for this project. This essentially means we are looking at options for potential solutions and narrowing them down to find what works best for our clients' given parameters.

Assessing the options the designer has come up with, the current plan is to install a bridge at the front of the building that is connected to the Perrodo building. This should help to combat many of the accessibility issues as the Perrodo building is fitted with accessibility features up to modern standards.

Additionally, we are working with acoustic specialists in order to improve soundproofing and general acoustics. This will allow for the room to better cater to future performances held there.

Our hope is that these upgrades will allow for added inclusivity and access to music facilities. This creates a better environment and experience for those at the college and should maintain the high level of quality St Peter's is known for.
