We take a look at what inspired Iconic apprentice Ed Nash to pursue a career in construction project management.

What Inspired Me to Pursue a Career in Construction Project Management?
I’ve always loved working with my hands. Whether it was small home renovations or bar refurbishments, I enjoyed the process of transforming old spaces into something new. Working alongside skilled tradespeople and seeing a project come to life was something that truly fascinated me, and I knew I wanted to be part of that process in a bigger way.
My Career Journey So Far
I chose not to go to university and instead explored a variety of jobs, from working in film to selling jewellery. Through these experiences, I learned a lot about my skills, interests, and what I didn’t enjoy. I eventually found myself working on various construction projects, and I always admired the project managers. I saw them as the people who brought everything together, and I realised—that’s what I want to do.
A Project I’m Particularly Proud Of
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve worked on was in the Philippines, helping to rebuild classrooms after a typhoon. I came across this opportunity while traveling and decided to reroute my plans to volunteer. Over six weeks, I worked with an organisation called All Hands and Hearts, alongside people from all over the world. It was an incredible experience, not just in terms of construction, but in witnessing the power of community coming together for a shared purpose.
Essential Skills for Success in Project Management
Patience, organisation, and communication are crucial in this role. Managing different aspects of a project requires structure, but it also requires the ability to listen to people and understand their needs. Of course, a sprinkle of kindness also goes a long way.
Handling Challenges on Site
When unexpected situations arise, I take a step back and give myself 10 minutes to assess what’s happened. Then, I come up with a plan to resolve the issue. Keeping a level head and thinking methodically helps keep everything on track.
Life on the Job
A Typical Day in My Role
My day starts with a hearty breakfast. Then, I go through emails and focus on my task list for a few hours. I always take a walk at lunch—it helps clear my mind. The afternoon consists of more emails, meetings, and project-related tasks.

My Favourite Part of the Construction Process
The transition from old to new is always the most satisfying part for me.
Keeping Projects on Schedule and Within Budget
I regularly review the project plan and costs—daily or weekly—to identify any deviations. If something changes, I reflect on the cause and communicate any necessary adjustments transparently.
A Memorable Lesson I’ve Learnt
Never assume someone’s capabilities. While in the Philippines, I worked with a female volunteer who turned out to be incredibly strong and highly skilled—she had served in the Israeli army. That experience taught me the importance of not judging on appearances and keeping an open mind about people’s abilities.
Managing Relationships with Clients, Contractors, and Teams
I believe in treating people how I’d like to be treated—open, transparent, and friendly communication is key.
