The Iconic Project Management team

Follow the career of your dreams at the best construction company in the world to work for.

Iconic Project Management is a small family business and our purpose is to make the construction industry a space that offers opportunity, in which people can be proud to work. We have a plan for sustained growth over the next five years which means that there will be plenty of opportunities to have a career with us that exceeds all expectations.

Our favourite quote is this one from Richard Branson:

‘Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don’t want to’

We have taken this advice to heart and it’s at the core of everything we do. We believe that, in order to be the best construction company for our clients, we need to be the best for our employees. This means we can attract and retain the very best people with the best knowledge and the best talent. We are committed to continuously developing them so that they become the best that they can possibly be.

Train and develop

Some of our team have joined us with a long and illustrious career behind them. They are superbly qualified and experienced. They have fantastic skills and can complete their work with the highest level of quality.

Other team members are just starting their careers. In some cases, they are straight from school, with no industry-specific qualifications and no experience.

Regardless of what stage our colleagues are at in their careers, we are equally committed to guiding them towards the future they have dreamed of.

Here's an article by UTC Reading featuring an interview with Mike Weeks, Senior Project Manager at Iconic Project Management, about his work as a careers mentor.

Dreaming of the future

We are big on dreams at Iconic Project Management. A wise man once told us that, if you know what you want the end to look like, you can make a plan to get you there. We want to know what our colleagues want their futures to look like so that we can work with them to get them there.

Everyone benefits from continuous professional development, right up until retirement age. Our priority is to provide all our team members with the knowledge, guidance and coaching they need to keep them moving towards their dream.

Apprenticeships

Iconic Project Management has been approved to offer degree apprenticeships by the University College of Estate Management and, at the time of writing (July 2022), our first apprentice has been recruited and is about to start work with us. They will be studying for BSc (hons) Construction Management with MRICS over 5 years. By the end of the programme, they will be a chartered surveyor with project management expertise. They’ll be ready to begin their life as a construction professional and we’ll support them all the way.

We are so excited to be able to offer this scheme. It exactly fits with our mission to offer opportunity and, if all goes well with our first apprentice guinea pig, we plan to have an intake to this scheme at least once per year.

You can read an article by our first degree apprentice, Oscar, telling us why he chose to undertake an apprenticeship through Iconic Project Management.

Treat them well.

Our clients get the best results from us when we have a stable team so we work very hard to make sure that our people want to stay with us long term.

Freedom

People stay in their job when it gives them satisfaction. We believe that satisfaction comes from freedom. We give all our employees freedom to try new things out, make suggestions and improvements. We give them freedom to take responsibility for themselves. We offer our colleagues all the support they want but encourage them to do things their own way.

We believe in freedom of information. There are no ‘secrets’ as such in our business. Obviously, there are certain things that must be kept confidential but we freely share business information with our team members. This means that everyone is able to make fully informed decisions about both their business activities and their personal lives.

We also believe in freedom to be your true self. We are against any form of discrimination at Iconic Project Management. We treat each other with respect, cooperation and support at all times. Anyone who shares those attitudes is welcome here.

Feedback

We love ideas and will always encourage our people to try things out. Some things will work but others will fail. That’s ok. We believe that feedback is essential to really understand what works well and what doesn’t. Our culture of open communication means that it can be delivered without fear or rancour.

Feedback, as we understand it, is a process of evaluating past actions in order to improve the future. It is entirely positive. Criticism, on the other hand, is about finding fault and apportioning blame. We avoid that kind of negativity here.

Feedback does, of course, go both ways. While we see it as our duty to deliver feedback so that our colleagues can improve and achieve their goals, we need to receive it to achieve our own. Our team members are always asked for feedback at their regular review meetings but they know that, if something needs saying, they can tell us at any time.

Reward.

We share our successes here. We recognise achievement and celebrate each other's wins.

We share our profits. We go out of our way to pay our employees well, offering competitive salaries and an auto-enrolled pension scheme. We even operate a profit share scheme in which every single salaried employee can benefit from a share of our profits.

We give back time. We offer all employees a generous annual leave allowance, plus a paid Christmas shutdown period. Construction project management is rarely a 9-5 job. Work streams ebb and flow and, sometimes, our team members have to work really hard to keep a project on track or meet a deadline. However, having a satisfactory work/life balance is important. We pay attention to feedback from our team members and, when they are having to work longer hours more than occasionally, we hire new people.

Space

Work should be a place you want to be. You need to be comfortable to do your best work. We’re in the process of moving our business away from serviced office space and into our own, self-contained suite in the heart of Wokingham town centre. We should be in our new premises in October 2022.

The location is ideal for us. We’ll be within walking distance of the train station, which is important because we encourage our people to travel by public transport where practical. It’s also in the middle of all the shops, bars, restaurants and other attractions of this thriving town centre. We can’t wait to be able to get lunch from the farmers market or get a drink together after work.

Our new office suite needs refurbishing before we can move in and we’re going to make sure it has everything we need to make us feel at home. At the time of writing, we’re working on the design but team requests include a decent coffee machine, sit-stand desks, air conditioning, comfortable breakout seating… click here to keep up to date with progress of our refurbishment project.

Best of all, our new office will be dog friendly. Dolly the Iconic dog can’t wait to help us to manage stress levels and hone our ball throwing, tummy scratching, and biscuit giving skills.

Do you think we sound like the kind of company that could help you reach your career goals and life dreams?
